Today was the first day without a downwind session. Yesterday we surfed the longest distance of the week and reached after 110 km our final downwind destination: Atins. This place is famous for its Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses, which is a large national park of sand dunes. After the wet season, lots of the troughs between these dunes are filled with water, creating an extraordinary landscape with thousands of small lagoons. The pattern of sandy dunes and lagoons result in a surreal view from the sky that could also have been a Yayoi Kusama artwork.
The group started the day with kitesurfing in one of these lagoons. The relief of the dunes around the lagoon results in some wind turbulence and a gusty wind, but that did not stop the group from freestyling and practicing new tricks like a megaloop or a beachstart from the top of the dunes.
The team was really thrilled by the circumstances of this desolate kitespot, which feels like you’re kitesurfing at the end of the world.
After the lunch break, the team moved to another lagoon for a sunset kitesurf session. In the afternoon we thought the scenery couldn’t get better, but we were wrong. When the sun starts to set, the game between sunlight and shadow makes this place even more breathtaking. Completely excited about this spectacular day in the national park, the team headed satisfied back to our accommodation Vila Guara (for the attentive followers: the big red birds we witnessed in the delta).
